Editorial….

Dear Reader,

I am pleased to release December 2022 issue of Rainbow Stamp News. With this issue, Rainbow completes 15 years of successful publication without any break. My sincere thanks to all its Readers and Contributors. The National Philatelic Exhibition AMRITPEX 2023 Prospectus is released and details have come and are available on its website. In this exhibition, more than 1400 frames will be displayed. Now it is time to get registered and apply for participation.  The exhibition will be organized at a large scale as this exhibition is being organized by India Post with the active support of the Philatelic Congress of India and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.  India Post is organizing a national exhibition after a long time so there must be some new activities to make this show grand and successful. This time the participation fee for AMRITPEX 2022 is kept quite high as the Department of Posts, itself is organizing this exhibition, the entry fee structure must be affordable, and the present fee structure given in the prospectus should be changed and reduced by Rs 500 in all categories (Rs 1000, Rs 1500 & Rs 2500 per frame for competitive class, One Frame & Literature Class and Championship class will be more appropriate)

Apart from regular activities, medals, and awards given by the jury, some new activities and special awards could be introduced in order to promote philately like Public Awards in junior and senior categories, special awards for philatelic journalism in print and digital media as well as special awards to philatelic clubs/societies, and eminent philatelists, working for the promotion of philately since a long time. This will definitely encourage those who have lost interest in philately and new philatelists will come forward in this hobby...More activities, workshops, and prizes for children visiting and participating in the exhibition. My best wishes to the organizing team for a successful exhibition and all those participating in AMRITPEX 2023.

This is all for this month. More in the next issue.

Happy Collecting! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Enjoy Exhibiting, Not Award....

Today I received my exhibit safe and sound with my certificate, medal, and souvenir back from Cape Town. I thank  Mr. Shakil Ahmed from the core of my heart, the appointed commissioner for Cape Town 2022, International Stamp Exhibition held in Cape Town, South Africa from 8-12 November 2022 for the excellent service given. I participated in this exhibition with one of my exhibits “Labelling Air Mail” in Aero Philately class. The purpose was just to participate.  I got just 64 marks but for me, these are nothing less than 94 points in terms of pleasure, joy, and satisfaction I got.

Well, let me inform you that I always strived for pleasure from exhibiting. I never strived for high awards. Because looking forward to high awards takes away the pleasure, if you don’t get it. I have practiced abstracting pleasure only from participation. To add to this, I would like to share that in my various previous participations in International and World Exhibitions, I exhibited my different themes such as Automobiles, Mail and its Movement etc.. Even in the last four National exhibitions, I participated with my different exhibits. I did get good awards also. But the joy of exhibiting has always been much more than getting awards.

Well, let me put before you all that we must not forget participation only brings award, and an award does not come without participation. The pleasure that one draws from participation is permanent but getting the award is temporary. If I put it in different words, it’s like cooking which gives you the pleasure of preparation, and further if it gets appreciation from the one who eats, it adds to the joy. Philatelic exhibiting is just like that. There are two types of awards one gets by participating one which is given by the public, the visitors who appreciate your collection, your efforts, your exhibit, and some of them even guide you. This public interaction and appreciation is one award that has of course critical, genuine but emotional analysis and outputs. This award is given by a child to an old person. Everyone who visits your exhibit appreciates it, maybe a little less or more. The award so given by visitors is not bound by any rule, regulation, or time-bound judgment. But the formal awards given by the appointed jury are not from the heart, not caring about your emotions but strictly bound by rules and regulations within a set frame of jury mindset and time span. Which sometimes becomes a soar rather than a source of pleasure.  So, awards and rewards both are there in participation. From the above discussion, I just want to emphasize that don’t look forward to awards but just participate. Enjoy the participation. But this does not mean that one should compromise with his quality of exhibiting. No, try your best to exhibit your best without caring about the award. Further, don’t harp if you get the award you had judged for you.

So, in this short discussion, I would request and advise all the collectors, and exhibitors that they should enjoy philately, enjoy participation irrespective of any expectations of getting a high award. In fact, awards are just a status of evaluation of your exhibit within the set frame of rules and regulations. But believe me, you can abstract much more joy when you stop looking for the award.  Call critiques on the frame, and discuss with them. Get new ideas on how to improve your collection and also exhibit. Please note exhibiting is as important as collection. So come forward to exhibit because it gives others joy also.

APRITPEX 2023 is knocking. Is calling… is inviting us all, So, get ready to visit the same as an exhibitor or as a visitor to enjoy the world of stamps, the quality versatile exhibiting, and the new world displayed under one roof.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

On big demand of many readers the article 'Disinfection of Mail' by Naresh Agrawal is being published here again in a series. The article was highly appreciated by the readers around the globe. -Editor

DISINFECTION OF MAIL

Contd from the last….

Mail is the postal material that travels long distances and is handled by various persons right from the sender to the addressee. Climatic, geological, and biological conditions all around the world differ from place to place and from time to time. Sometimes there are some epidemics or contagious, infectious and communicable diseases spread in some areas which are likely to be transmitted through the mail. Also, sometimes there are chances of chemical or bioterrorist attacks by so-called militants through the mail system, sometimes some viruses get attached to the mail which are then spread to wherever the mail goes and whosoever handles it or the mail in contact with the mail adds to the threat.

UV DISINFECTION SYSTEMS:

The UV Bulk Mail Irradiation System consists of a chamber for disinfecting mail that has become contaminated by anthrax bacteria and anthrax spores. Contaminated mail is placed in the chamber. Consideration for the characteristics of the chamber in which the contaminated mail has been placed, the location of the C-band ultraviolet lights, the duration of the sterilization process allow effective elimination of this biohazard from the contaminated mail.

GASEOUS TREATMENT   :  Certain gases like Chloride dioxide, ethylene oxide, methyl bromide and ozone have been identified suitable for  gaseous disinfection and sanitization as they have anti-microbial properties . These gases are not only used for disinfection of the mail but  used for disinfecting spaces and  buildings

Large amounts of gas would be needed to sterilize mail and it is not evident that gases can kill microorganisms within sealed letters, flats, and packages. Gaseous sterilization of mail is not currently a viable option for mail sanitization. But this certainly can disinfect the outer covers and the packages and space where the mail is kept.

STEAM AUTOCLAVING

An autoclave is a device to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high-pressure saturated steam at 121 °C or more, typically for 15-20 minutes depending on the size of the load and the contents. It was invented in 1879, although a precursor known as the steam digester was created in 1679.

The image above shows an envelope containing a phone bill suspected for anthrax has been sterilized using a steam autoclave. The small rectangle over the barcode is the shrunken remains of the plastic window which is readable on removal of plastic. This bill was the worst damaged piece of paper mail I received in the mail, during the first month of autoclaving, due to the large black areas of low-temperature toner. Steam Autoclaving in a spore-tested autoclave will inactivate anthrax spores. Typical paper mail survives this process. There may be the occasional water spot or in some cases laser toner sticks two pages together but they can be separated and the mail is still readable.

EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON MAIL

Some adverse effects were observed to the mail comprised of a number of papers and plastics exposed to radiation method leading to various mechanical and  structural deformations.

COLOUR CHANGES  :

Due to radiation the paper of mail material was found to become gray or may exhibits definite yellowing or some change in color. I some case the color shift is not necessarily immediate but occurred over the time. This indicated that the initial irradiation induced the formation of unstable intermediates, such as peroxides, that continued to breakdown after the irradiation process was over.Contrary to this some common inks present on irradiated papers did not seem to change color.

Discolored irradiated mail

MECHANICAL DAMAGE  :

According to postal sources, temperatures of the irradiated materials can reach 130degree C. which  causes distortion and softening of the clear windows of the envelops and in some cases adhering to the printed matter beneath. Certain printed materials have become stuck together, possibly due to the softening of the resins in the printing inks or photocopying toner. Moisture driven from the paper by high temperature can also condense and cause "blocking". Images on slides have been found to crack due to the high temperatures.

Tensile measurements on irradiated paper show that there is a substantial loss in the ability of the paper to be deformed and become brittle, stiffer, loose strength and so paper can not be folded so paper degrades. It may become fragile, and some plastics have bubbled or melted.

The paper damaged due to irradiation of mail

Christmas 2001 catalog packed in black plastic bag package to contain any contamination with a letter from USPS. This Plastic bag/envelope has never been opened as after the October 2001 due to anthrax  attacks as the Washington's mail became suspect. Letter explains how this piece of mail had been irradiated and is safe to open and view..

Irradiation's effects on paper caused some alarm in the philatelic world, which sends large numbers of rare postage stamps and covers through the mail. A number of auction houses stopped sending material through the mail, and Linn’s Stamp News regularly featured reports on stamps and covers that had been ruined by irradiation.

Although at one time the USPS expected to irradiate all mail, it later scaled back to just treating mail sent to government offices.

The response of the Post Office to the anthrax problem has been the electron irradiation of select portions of the mail. The mail is packaged in sealed plastic to a good thickness and irradiated in two passes. Sufficient examples of the irradiated mail have been examined to permit some observations.

THE  MAJOR  EPIDEMICS  AND  MAIL  DISINFECTION

During the middle ages and thereafter, the disinfection practices were based on the belief that all the major epidemics such as Cholera, Plague, Smallpox, Typhus Fever, Yellow Fever, Leprosy  etc. could be conveyed through paper stuffs and so were checked by  then prevailing traditional methods of disinfection  due to which the postal mail paper based articles were disinfected. This belief, which was still held by many countries until late in the 19th. Century, and after the development in medical sciences the proper reasons for outbreak and  methods of disinfection were found and established.

SMALLPOX   :    Smallpox is an infectious disease unique to humans believed to have emerged about 10000B.C., caused by either of two virus variants, Variola major and Variola minor. The earliest physical evidence of smallpox is likely the postural rash on the mummified body of Pharaoh Tamses V of Egypt, who died in 1157 BC. The term "smallpox" was first used in Europe in the 15th century as its intense effect was seen. During the 18th century the effect was even devastating in Europe

Quarantine Certificate dated April 29,1777 at New Haven issued by quarantine inspector, a physician certifying that the affected person has been cleaned from  Smallpox as he had not been exposed to public.

In the United States, William Osler, a young Canadian physician, while recovering from a mild case of smallpox contracted while attending patients, in a letter written that same month to an old schoolmate described his illness and noted in closing, "You need not be afraid of this letter. I will disinfect it before sending". Concern about disseminating smallpox through this letter was well-founded. The concern was the danger that the letter might pose to his friend Jarvis and not to cell cultures.

Indeed, years later in 1901 in New York, articles in 2 respected medical journals incriminated letters as sources of 2 separate epidemics of smallpox . Also in the same year spread of smallpox through mail matter transmission was highlighted several times in different medical journals and newspapers quoting different incidents of killing several people

Letter dated 12.07.1842 from New York to Whitehall, Pennsylvania, describes the arrival of French War Steamship named Gomer to harbor  and its sending to Quarantine as declined to enter port due to suspect smallpox epidemic

Letter dated 11.01.1846 at Philadelphia, sent to Cedar creek, Delaware, the contents relate to a smallpox epidemic informing about spread of smallpox during winter and 26 deaths during Christmas week.          The sender showed his fear to visit Milford due to this. The letter sheet has all over-smoked appearance and is likely to have been fumigated before leaving Philadelphia.

In Australia, there was regular spread of smallpox and all measures to check it from time t time were taken like quarantine, treatment of mail etc.

The P&O Himalaya arrived in Australia in 1897 with a case of smallpox on board. Passengers and crew were quarantined at a number of stations from Albany to Sydney. The cover is addressed to a lady who was a passenger in the Himalaya and quarantined in Sydney.

In Australia,in1935 passengers from the Aorangi were quarantined in Sydney at the North Head Quarantine Station in 1935 following a case of smallpox aboard the ship. Covers were also treated at the station and passed out through the nearby Manly office.

Upper half of the registered letter suspect of Smallpox was quarantined and treated at                              quarantine station passed through Manly Office..

Passengers from the Strathaird were detained in Melbourne at the Quarantine Station at Portsea in 1938. This was the second to last occasion the temporary post office was opened at the station. The corners have been cut off the envelope to allow the formaldehyde gas to reach the letter inside.

In the 20th century, some mail was heat-treated to prevent the spread of smallpox.

CHOLERA

It is an infection of the small intestines caused by the bacterium Vibrio Cholerae. Transmission is primarily through contaminated drinking water or food. Cholera is a major cause of death in the world. It was one of the earliest studies by epidemiological methods.

The cholera pandemics of the early 19th century led to the widespread treatment of mail, although the concern had died down by the 1840s.

And in 1832, when cholera came to Kentucky, US Senator Henry Clay established a tent city on his estate outside Lexington for the 2,000 citizens who fled the town.

Letter explaining the havoc of Cholera in New York City in 1832

Letter dated 18 Aug 1832 at White Plains, New York, Miss Mac Donald writes of the devastating Cholera epidemic inflicted upon the city of New York.” Cholera prevails still in New York – The daily number of cases being about 70 and deaths about 30.It is however considered subsiding – the panic is over and many persons are returning to the city. The disease has been much more destructive to human life in New York than had been the case with Yellow Fever. More than 2600 have died of cholera.

Epidemics affected mail at Honolulu ten times between 1853 and 1900 with some of these episodes involved disease in Hawaii and some at places such as San Francisco or in Asia and steps were taken in Hawaii to disinfect mail from those placed before delivering it. Covers from at least two periods when Honolulu with cholera or plague shows evidence of disinfecting.

Cholera epidemic quarantined Honolulu in1895 for a few months and mail was fumigated before it

Postmarked September 30, 1895 at Honolulu and clipped at the corners to allow fumigation. According to Burt, this registered letter to Bombay suspect of cholera was fumigated at Honolulu, again at San Francisco and a third time at Bombay.

Postmarked October 11, 1895 at Hilo and sent directly to San Francisco on the bark Santiago during the 1895 cholera epidemic in Honolulu.

 PLAGUE   :

The Black Plague, was one of the deadliest pandemics in human history, widely thought to have been caused by a bacterium named Yersinia pestis (Bubonic Plague), but recently sometimes attributed to other diseases. It most likely began in Central Asia and spread to Europe during the 1340s and showed devastating effects reducing the world’s population from an estimated 450 million to between 350 and 375 million in 1400.

Prior to 1730, the Venetians opened suspect letters and “Perfumed” them, without applying heat. From 1735,new regulations required heat treatment; and if opened, to be certified by an endorsement, hand struck marks being used from the 1760’s.The crayon ’S’ was provisional.(the slits were made for a ribbon and seal to close the letter, and not for fumigation.)

Epidemics affected mail at Honolulu ten times between 1853 and 1900 and six of those occasions came in the UPU Period. Not all of these episodes involved disease in Hawaii. Some were epidemics at places such as San Francisco or in Asia and steps were taken in Hawaii to disinfect mail from those placed before delivering it. Covers from at least two periods when Honolulu was gripped with cholera or plague show evidence of disinfecting.

By the early 20th century, plague, typhus, and yellow fever were known to be transmitted by arthropod vectors

Disinfected Cover dated Oct.26,1912 from St. Petersburg to Rakhinka, Astrakhan (addressed to "Dr. Dmitri Yakovlevitch, who was fighting the Plague") and struck with fine straight line "Obessarashenko" disinfection marking in blue-black. Cover was received in Astrakhan (8/11) and the disinfection cachet was probably applied there on arrival.

Disinfected cover dated Nov. 27,1911 franked from Novaya Kazanka (Astrakhan)) to St. Petersburg during epidemic of Plague in Astrakhan and struck (probably on despatch as there are traces of staining to the envelope) with fine Cyrillic "Dezinfitsirovano" straight line disinfection cachet in violet.

Later scientific knowledge attributed the spread of the Plague and Cholera respectively to rat fleas and polluted drinking water. The measures taken to disinfect mail are now seen not merely as inadequate but unnecessary.

 ANTHRAX  :

Anthrax is an acute disease in humans and animals caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis which is highly lethal in some forms caused by inhalation, gastrointestinal absorption, and skin exposure. This is usually fatal, and symptoms usually begin days after exposure. There are effective vaccines against anthrax. Some forms of the disease respond well to antibiotic treatment.

Mail in the collection of author treated for anthrax packed in polythene/plastic cover with mail disinfection related information

The 2001 anthrax attacks in the United States, also known as Amerithrax from its FBI case name, occurred over the course of several weeks beginning on September 18, 2001. More than 5000 letters containing anthrax spores were mailed through USPS to several news media offices killing five people and infecting severely 18 others.

Until the 20th century, anthrax infections killed lacs  of animals and people each year in Asia Australia, Africa, North America, and Europe. French scientist Louis Pasteur developed the first effective vaccine for anthrax in 1881. Thanks to over a century of animal vaccination programs, sterilization of raw animal waste materials and anthrax eradication programs in different parts of the world which has checked the spread of Anthrax  in a big way.

Letters dated 18.09,2001 postmarked Trenton, N.J. Outside, they were addressed to NBC anchor Tom Brokaw and to the Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle  containing anthrax spores /powder killed 5 people and infected 18 others throughout the US. including  2 postal workers.

SARS  :  (SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY SYNDROME )

It is a respiratory disease in humans which is caused by SARS corona virus .There has been one near pandemic to date in the years 2002 and 2003 with more than 10.000 known infected cases and about 1000 confirmed human deaths.  Within a matter of weeks in early 2003, SARS spread from the Guangdong province of China to rapidly infect individuals in some 37 countries around the world.

Disinfected Post card dated 13.09.2003 suspected infected by SARS

Looking in to the severity of the epidemic, in 2003 the proposal of the constitution of a new European monitoring, regulatory and research institution had been made, since the already available system of surveillance had found an enormous challenge in the global emergency of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). In the absence of a targeted vaccine, general preventive interventions have to be relied upon, including high healthcare surveillance and public information. Quarantine has, then again adhered to as the same had strongly suggested its validity.

 FOOT AND MOUTH  DISEASE  :

Foot-and-mouth disease, FMD or hoof-and-mouth disease, is a highly consanguineous and at times fatal viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals, including domestic animals such as cattle, water buffalo, sheep, goats,  and pigs. It is caused by the foot and mouth disease virus.

YELLOW FEVER :   In 1793, yellow fever swept through Philadelphia, then our federal capital. Alexander Hamilton left town, and President George Washington remained at Mount Vernon until the fall frost had been reported up North.

Mail from the tropics, particularly Hawaii, was treated against yellow fever.  In the United States in 1712, when yellow fever threatened Boston, mail from docking ships was first exposed to burning sulfur.

Disinfection and Fumigation after the Death of a Person with Yellow Fever, October 17, 1888

Ordinance Pertaining to the Destruction, Disinfection, and Sanitation of "Infected Property"

This is an ordinance, passed by the city council of MacClenny, Florida, December 18, 1888, emphasizing replacement of  items destroyed in the course of disinfection, while putting in place the possibility of imprisonment or a $100 fine for failure of property owners to comply. The ordinance illustrates the necessity of a direct relationship between local authorities and the national Marine Hospital Service prior to the establishment of the State Board of Health. It also shows how rigid and stringent the disinfection and inspection measures sometimes were.

 TYPHUS  :

Typhoid fever is an illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhi. It is transmitted by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person. The bacteria then multiply in the bloodstream of the infected person and are absorbed into the digestive tract and eliminated with the waste. This bacteria grows best at 37°C. In history Typhoid has also spread like an epidemic at different places from time to time.

In 1813, typhus decimated the French army in Moscow, forcing Napoleon to retreat to Paris.

Army Surgeon-General on Typhoid Fever

The cover has been designed and manufactured by Brigadier-General George M. Sternberg, a leading bacteriologist and Surgeon-General of the United States Army, during his sanitary recommendations in 1898 emphasized the danger of polluted water and advocated usage of boiled or purified water and proper disposal of waste to check the spread of Typhoid Fever. The cover’s actual user, however, enclosed a letter detailing the stateside ravages of typhoid fever.

Goods imported into the country could be seized and treated or even destroyed. The certificate hereunder shows the disinfection of wine flagons imported from Timor. The parcels post section of every state sent goods to be disinfected to their local quarantine station or board of health. Parcels of second-hand clothes or animal products were often treated.

The Fumigation/Disinfection Certificate certify that the goods contained inside the container have been fumigated/disinfected against insects, fungi, or any other kind of parasite that could be carried within the wooden material. In some countries is not mandatory; costs are different depending on the quantity of goods to be disinfected and are not included in the Shipping expenses.

CERTIFICATION OF DECONTAMINATION  :

Once letters had been decontaminated, some sort of certification was noted on them. As late as 1837, a paste or wax seal was affixed to fumigated letters. But this certification was impractical with large numbers of letters, so soon each letter was simply stamped, much like a modern-day postal cancellation. Cancellations, cachets, seals and marks were used to certify the same.

DISINFECTION EXAMINATION STAMPS  :

HEALTH  PASSPORTS  :

These health certificates were initially referred to the medical health of the ships, vessels and the material arrived in a zone and not referred to individuals normally until mid of the  20th century Later these were issued to individuals.

HEALTH PASSPORT - 1806 stamped and signed by medical authority -- the double circle COMMIS DIPART DI SANITA' DEL PANARO with scale and swords – Modena,  the document shows traces of disinfection fumigation

PRATIQUE      :

It is the license or health certificate given to a ship to enter the port on assurance from the captain to convince the authorities that he/she is free from contagious disease. The clearance granted is commonly referred to as Free Pratique.

Pratique issued at New Heaven, Connecticut in April 11, 1777 during an epidemic of smallpox. It reads “This may certify that Samuel Jacket is clean from smallpox so that he may return  to his business and not expose to public”

FITTNESS CARD   :

The card were issued to passengers certifying that they were fit and needed not to be detained at quarantine.

The card was required to be kept by passengers to avoid detention by Quarantine in New York, or while travelling by Rail or Steamers in the United States

QUARANTINE INSPECTION CARD  :

At Sydney Harbor, the ships arriving needed a certificate of freedom from disease that pertained to the entire ship, and that would be determined by the route on which the ship had come. If the ship had come to Sydney from London via what was then Ceylon, and if there was known to be an epidemic of cholera or smallpox in Ceylon, then that entire ship would be understood to be diseased and it would be put in quarantine for a certain period of time. So for mail to be assured as clean the entire ship was needed to have clean certificate of disinfection and cleanliness irrespective of the health or otherwise of the individuals on board.

FINAL REMARKS   :

In the past for almost the last 500 years and even now, mail has been considered a major carrier of epidemics throughout the world as its quantity and movement have increased tremendously. And so, there are strict and regular measures employed to check the same. Different sanitation, quarantine disinfection, and decontamination rules, laws, and acts were made from time to time by different governments, authorities, and administrations. Quarantine is still in existence and is being appreciated at times. However, with the development in medical sciences, there has been change in treatments given to the mail adhered to in past because of lack of knowledge regarding the cause of disease. Also, different methods have been adopted utilizing the latest technology to handle a good quantity of mail in a limited time with assurance of disinfection.

Einstein’s Greatest Breakthrough

US #1285 – Einstein published more than 300 scientific papers during his lifetime.

On November 21, 1905, Einstein published a paper that presented one of the world’s most famous formulas — E=mc2.

US #1774 – E=mc2 laid the foundation for atomic energy.

One of the greatest scientific minds in human history, Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Württemberg, Germany in 1879. Although he was very successful in the end, Einstein occasionally faced adversity. Not always a great student, he had a teacher who told him that nothing would ever become of him. Then, after graduating with teaching credentials, he couldn’t find a job in his field. He finally found a position as a clerk, and, although this was not his chosen profession, it left him time to research and write about his theory of relativity.

Guinea #2136 features different paintings of Einstein.

In 1905, Einstein was awarded his PhD from the University of Zurich. That same year, called his annus mirabilis (miracle year), he published four papers in the journal Annalen der Physik (Annals of Physics). The first three of these introduced the scientific community to the photoelectric effect, expanded on the kinetic theory of heat, and formed the basis of his theory of relativity.

On November 21, Einstein published his final paper of the year, “Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy Content?” This paper introduced the formula E=mc2. According to the formula, the energy of a body at rest (E) is equal to its mass (m) multiplied by the speed of light (c) squared. Many of Einstein’s miracle year theories were controversial for years before they were accepted by leading physicists. This equation in particular enabled developments as diverse as the atom bomb, diagnostic P.E.T. scans, and smoke detectors. Over time, Einstein’s ideas became widely accepted. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his work with the photoelectric effect.

Grenada #3208-09 – These stamps honor Einstein’s receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1921 for his contributions to theoretical physics and the photoelectric effect.

In 1933, while Einstein was visiting the United States, the Nazis seized all of his possessions in Germany. He knew he couldn’t return, so he officially renounced his German citizenship. Einstein then accepted a position as a staff member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1940, he became an American citizen.

US #1285 – Plate Block First Day Cover

In 1939, as the world war continued to spread across the globe, a number of scientists including Einstein grew concerned over Germany’s goal to build an atomic weapon. Believing they were close to succeeding, these scientists sent a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt, voicing their concern. From this letter, the Manhattan Project was born. Einstein wasn’t allowed to participate, and the scientists involved were not permitted to discuss it with him because officials considered him a security risk. Einstein’s equation, E=mc2, explained how the energy of an atomic bomb was released, though it didn’t detail how to build one.

US #1774 – Classic First Day Cover

When asked about his role, Einstein said he didn’t consider himself the father of atomic energy and that his part was “quite indirect.” He also admitted that had he known the Germans wouldn’t succeed in building an atomic bomb, he never would have written the letter to President Roosevelt initiating the Manhattan Project.

24 October 2022 Chinese Zodiac Hare

Chinese Zodiac - Hare

“White hare against white snow was the challenge. I thought of Bruno Liljefors and got to work. One of the modern cliff houses was to appear in the background, so, I used the reflections of the sea in the windows. I drew the water a little bluer than it might be at this time of year and a faint winter sun. It worked well as a contrast, and I could also use the blue tone for shadows in the snow. I gathered the hares in a small-talking group down by the reeds. The reeds became the warm element, along with the calligraphy. This time, there were no hidden details to discover, but I am very pleased with the result!”

The mountain hare (Lepus timidus) is the only hare appearing in Åland. In the winter, they often roam among the modern holiday houses in northern Geta. The Havsvidden Resort with a guest harbour, hotel, and restaurant has been aorund for 30 years. In the early 2000s, the resort was expanded with modern cliff villas. Blending into the landscape among the red granite cliffs, the 40 cliff houses are equipped with 1–3 bedrooms, sauna, large terraces, and panoramic windows with sweeping views of the sea.

1 November 2022 : Road Safety

Road Safety

During the autumn-winter period, awareness and preparation are increasingly important to stay safe in traffic. There are a number of things to consider, including how to make yourself visible in the dark.

With low-beam headlights, a pedestrian without a reflector can only be seen from a distance of 30 metres (or about 15 metres in fog, rain, or snow). If a person wearing a high-quality reflector in a visible place crosses the road, he or she can be seen with low-beam headlights at a distance of 130 metres and with high-beam headlights, at a distance of 300 metres. In other words, the reflector indicates from a distance whether the pedestrian is walking on the side of the road or is about to cross the road.

The postage stamp ‘Road Traffic Safety’ is printed on a reflective material with excellent properties to help you stay visible. All reflective material increases your safety!
