Military Post Offices in Iraq to Close Nov. 17

By Cheryl Pellerin
American Forces Press Service

image

WASHINGTON, Oct. 26, 2011 – Because U.S. forces are coming home from Iraq by the end of the year, the U.S. Postal Service will stop accepting mail addressed to military post offices in Iraq starting Nov. 17, Defense Department officials said .

Military post offices in Iraq also will stop processing mail Nov. 17, and service members there should begin now to advise those who send them mail about the Nov. 17 deadline.Mail still in the postal system through Nov. 17 will be processed and delivered to service members in Iraq, officials said.

In November, U.S. military postal service responsibilities in Iraq will transition to State Department embassy or consulate post offices for service members assigned to Office of Security Cooperation or the Chief of Mission in Iraq. These sites will provide letter and parcel mail services to service members assigned to the Office of Security Cooperation or the Chief of Mission in Iraq.

The transition will be closely coordinated with the U.S. Postal Service Agency, which will delete ZIP codes for Iraq military post offices from the USPS database to prevent undeliverable mail from entering the postal system after Nov. 17, according to defense officials.

If APO mail arrives in Iraq after a service member departs, mail will be redirected to the new mailing address provided or, if no mailing address was provided, returned to sender.Any mail mistakenly accepted by a USPS post office after Nov. 17 will be returned to sender once it reaches the International Gateway in New Jersey.

Miniature sheet in a monoplane design

image

The South African Post Office has issued a miniature sheet to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first South African airmail flight as part of World Post month. The sheet depicts the monoplane in flight when, in 1911, the South African Minister of Posts and Telegraphs consented to the first conveyance of airmail between Kenilworth and Muizenberg. This made Muizenberg post office the first in South Africa to receive airmail. The special feature of this miniature sheet is that it is unique in design of a Plane shape.

Mourning Stamp from Germany

image

German Post issued a mourning stamp, dedicated to bereavement to express compassion and human grief. Stamps on such topic are rare to be seen. The special program launched in Germany offers stamps for special reasons having a wide variety of motives. This year a special postage stamp dedicated to bereavement was issued in Germany. This funeral stamp can be used both by the mourners themselves, and by those who want to offer their condolences in letter.

As a motif of the stamp Calla flower is chosen. The white Calla is symbolic of mourning and solidarity with the grieving people. The black bar at the bottom of the stamp underlines its symbolic meaning.

Interview

In this issue meet Mr Kenneth Sequeira, a keen collector from UAE. Kenneth has special interest in the stamps on Indian theme issued by other nations. His deep research and study on this subject enabled him to find out some very rare Indian subjects which appeared on foreign stamps but have not been noticed by many philatelists. He is an expat Indian currently working in Dubai, UAE but studied & brought up in Mumbai . He loves to collect stamps on Cricket & India and Indian theme on foreign stamps, Air India First Flight covers & covers stamped through Maitri & Gangotri Post Offices He mostly collect FDC, followed by MS/ SS & then MNH He was fascinated to stamp world since childhood days and inherited a good collection from a family member but he has been pursuing this hobby seriously, after visiting the GCC stamp exhibition in UAE and getting great support & encouragement from his wife.

He says “ India on foreign theme is so vast that while building my collection, co-incidentally I built up collections on Gandhi, India Flag, Nehru, Tagore, Mother Teresa, Indira Gandhi, SAARC themes. History being one of my favorite subjects & researching on topics my strength, has helped me in my collection. During this journey, I have met some passionate people like Sekhar Chakrabarti from Kolkata & Nazim Merchant from Sydney, who have guided & helped me & become good friends.”

His love for Indian theme makes him a very special philatelist. Kenneth has contributed articles on a variety of subjects for Rainbow Stamp Club Blog which have been highly appreciated by the readers. His findings on Indian theme is a reference work for those who wish to collect stamps on Indian theme. It will help them to categorize their collection systematically and give them maximum possibility to enrich their collection by including themes they have not noticed earlier. Kenneth’s all articles are available on Rainbow Stamp Club Blogunder the label “ Indian theme on foreign stamps” I am pleased to publish his interview in this issue . - Editor

Jaipur foot and an Indian Goan dessert have been featured on stamps from Kenya and Portugal

Q 4 What are your other collecting interests ? Besides Thematics do you also like traditional philately ?

Ans. My interests are Cricket on FDC, Cricket Macrophily, Air India First Flight Return Covers with Maharaja, Foreign Covers through Maitri & Gangotri Post Offices in Antarctica , Joint Issues of India

Q5 When did you start collecting stamps ?  How were you introduced to this hobby ?

Ans. I started collecting stamps from childhood when my cousin passed his stamp collection to me but started my serious collection in last 3 years after my visit to the Gulf Stamp Exhibition in Dubai

Q6. Would you like to participate in exhibitions  or you are happy with   collecting in your own way. Don't you think that  participating in exhibitions gives  a chance   to present collection with more creativity ?

Ans. Participating in exhibitions in this part of the world is an expensive affair, currently I am happy with my collection but I would like to see innovation in this field. Have a virtual exhibition just like photo albums.

Q7. What pleasure do you get from stamp collecting ? Please explain in your own words .

Ans. My love for history, inquisitive nature & specialization in research makes my stamp collecting exciting.

Q8. email,  Internet chatting  and mobile phones have taken the place of  traditional  hand written letters. What is the future of philately ?? Will it survive in  coming years ???

Q9. What is your opinion about  recent   hi - tech  stamps printed  with unique features ??  Do you like them ??

Ans. Most of them are good & unique . Innovations are always welcome but traditional stamps are the real thing, just like Cricket Tests vs ODI vs T20 in cricket

Q10. Today's philatelist collects for pleasure or investment ?? In your opinion, what is a general ratio between amateur and professional philatelist today  ?

Ans. Frankly, I started collecting, thinking it’s an investment but it’s the pleasure that really counts at the end of the day. 2 out 10 are professional rest all are amateur.

Q11 Please share your most memorable moment related with your collection  or a philatelic show  .

Ans. Memorable moments are when professional philatelists share work with me & ask for my opinion & they believe my contribution was valuable & give me credit or recognition for it.

Novel QR Code Postage Stamp

QR Codes on postage stamps are not new (cf. QR Code Valentine’s Day postage stamps from Taiwan and a QR Code postage stamp from Spain) but this (image below) from Hrvatske pošte, the national postal service of Croatia, incorporate a novel functionality.

image

Each of the 3.10 Kuna (0.56 U.S. dollars) stamps has a unique code printed below the QR Code. Scanning the QR Code takes the user to a mobile site where the unique code can be entered and view confirmation on the receipt of your mail as well as additional data about its route. Users can find out when the mail was sent, how many kilometers it had travelled, when it reached its destination and more. The QR Code stamp was produced to mark the 20th anniversary of the issuance of postal stamps by Croatian Post.

DISINFECTION OF MAIL

Contd…from the last

THE MAJOR EPIDEMICS AND MAIL DISINFECTION

During the middle ages and thereafter, the disinfection practices were based on the belief that all the major epidemics such as Cholera, Plague, Smallpox, Typhus Fever, Yellow Fever, Leprosy etc. could be conveyed through paper stuffs and so were checked by then prevailing traditional methods of disinfection due to which the postal mail paper based articles were disinfected. This belief, which was still held by many countries until late in the 19th. Century, and after the development in medical sciences the proper reasons for outbreak and methods of disinfection were found and established.

SMALLPOX : Smallpox is an infectious disease unique to humans believed to have emerged about 10000B.C., caused by either of two virus variants, Variola major and Variola minor. The earliest physical evidence of smallpox is likely the postural rash on the mummified body of Pharaoh Tamses V of Egypt, who died in 1157 BC. The term "smallpox" was first used in Europe in the 15th century as its intense effect was seen. During the 18th century the effect was even devastating in Europe.

image

Quarantine Certificate dated April 29,1777 at New Haven issued by quarantine inspector, a physician certifying that the affected person has been cleaned from Smallpox as he had not been exposed to public.

In United States,William Osler, a young Canadian physician, while recovering from a mild case of smallpox contracted while attending patients, in a letter written that same month to an old schoolmate described his illness and noted in closing, "You need not be afraid of this letter. I will disinfect it before sending". Concern about disseminating smallpox through this letter was well founded. The concern was the danger that the letter might pose to his friend Jarvis and not to cell cultures.

Indeed, years later in 1901 in New York, articles in 2 respected medical journals incriminated letters as sources of 2 separate epidemics of smallpox . Also in the same year spread of smallpox through mail matter transmission was highlighted several times in different medical journals and newspapers quoting different incidents killing several people .

Letter dated 11.01.1846 at Philadelphia, sent to Cedar creek, Delaware, the contents relate to a smallpox epidemic informing about spread of small pox during winter and 26 deaths during Christmas week. The sender showed his fear to visit Milford due to this. The letter sheet has all over smoked appearance, and is likely to have been fumigated before leaving Philadelphia.

In Australia, there was regular spread of smallpox and all measures to check it from time t time were taken like quarantine, treatment of mail etc.

In Australia, in 1935 passengers from the Aorangi were quarantined in Sydney at the North Head Quarantine Station in 1935 following a case of smallpox aboard the ship. Covers were also treated at the station and passed out through the nearby Manly office.

Passengers from the Strathaird were detained in Melbourne at the Quarantine Station at Portsea in 1938. This was the second to last occasion the temporary post office was opened at the station .The corners have been cut off the envelope to allow the formaldehyde gas to reach the letter inside.

In the 20th century some mail was heat-treated to prevent the spread of smallpox.

CHOLERA

It is an infection of the small intestines caused by the bacterium Vibrio Cholerae. Transmission is primarily through contaminated drinking water or food. Cholera is a major cause of death in the world. It was one of the earliest studied by epidemiological methods.

The cholera pandemics of the early 19th century led to widespread treatment of mail, although the concern had died down by the 1840s.

And in 1832, when cholera came to Kentucky, US Senator Henry Clay established a tent city on his estate outside Lexington for the 2,000 citizens who fled the town.

Epidemics affected mail at Honolulu ten times between 1853 and 1900 with some of these episodes involved disease in Hawaii and some at places such as San Francisco or in Asia and steps were taken in Hawaii to disinfect mail from those placed before delivering it. Covers from at least two periods when Honolulu with cholera or plague show evidence of disinfecting.

Philatelic World of CHILDREN BOOKS and STORIES

image ©Dr.Satyendra Kumar Agrawal

When there were no TV, no Computer, no Mobile, no nuclear family and folks enjoy their leisure time listening tales of enchantments and Princess, of wizards and dragons, and kings and Prince told by their grandparent lying on a cot with a cushion on his back.

image image image

Tales of Grandparents

He do not know how old these tales are or where they originated. They all were old even then, for he had taught them from his father and him from his father before that, and so on back into the shadows of enchanted past. Perhaps they were history, who can tell whether the magic in them came from the tales, or from the tellers.

But the teller held his audience entranced, as his words painted a living picture of long ago and faraway, of once-upon-a-time. Latter tellers of tales set them down on paper, and then they were printed in books. And now these books and their stories are also portrayed on stamps.

The world started celebrating the International ‘Children’s Book Day’ from 1967 and the day chosen, ‘2nd of April ‘is the birthday of the outstanding fairy tales writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875).

image

Hans Christian Andersen

‘Europa’ marked the year 2010 as “Year of Children’s Book’ and member postal administrations commemorated this year with beautiful stamps depicting popular children’s books of their country and their stories in them.

image image image

‘Europa 2010’ - “Year of Children’s Book’

It is hard to imagine a world without books for children. There have been children's stories and folk-tales ever since man first learned to speak, Children's books, however, are a late growth of literature.

image

No world without Children Books

The first books for children were written on the grounds of myths, folk narratives, the Bible stories, primers, and catechisms, stories from the lives of saints, moral teachings, and tales.

In India Vishnu Sharma’s ‘Panchatantra’ was written as early as 3BCE which is an inter-woven series of colourful fables, many of which involve animals exhibiting animal stereotypes. According to its own narrative, it illustrates, for the benefit of three ignorant princes, the central Hindu principles of ‘niti’ which is roughly means prudent worldly conduct, or "the wise conduct of life". A strong similarity exists between a small number of stories in The Panchatantra and Aesop's fables.

image image

Panchtantra

It is "certainly the most frequently translated literary product of India", and these stories are among the most widely known in the world. There are recorded over two hundred different versions known to exist in more than fifty languages, and three-fourths of these languages are extra-Indian. As early as the eleventh century this work reached Europe, and before 1600 it existed in Greek, Latin, Spanish, Italian, German, English, Old Slavonic, Czech, and perhaps other Slavonic languages. Its range has extended from Java to Iceland.

The children’s literature constitutes an equal part of the reading culture, as fairy tales help children to know the world. The books for children usually are full of illustrations, which help young readers to perceive the contents. Good illustrations supplement stories and describe characters in more details.

image

Children Books are usually full of illustrations

It is also believed that first child’s book was a picture book; Orbis sensualium pictus (The Visible World in Pictures) published by Jan Amos Komensky in Latin language during 1658 and aimed for educating adults and children.

image

First child’s book –‘Orbis sensualium pictus’

But Justin Bertuch, a publisher from Weimar and a patron of art who between 1770 and 1830 published Bilderbuch für Kinder (Picture Book for Children) – a publisher’s series of 12 tomes on 1185 pages with 6000 illustrations is considered to be the real father of the children’s picture book.

In 1693, John Locke of Great Britain was the first to suggest the idea that children should read for pleasure, and recommended Aesop for them to try. People thought this idea of providing children with books for enjoyment was crazy, and it failed to catch on.

image

Aesop fables

In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance the only children’s books available were spelling books

image image image

‘A’ for ‘Apple’ –‘B’ for ‘Ball’

and those related to fables in which animals were the main characters and played a moralizing role.

image

‘Panchantra’, animals were the main characters

In the 17th century fantasy books on fairies and legends passed on from one generation to the other began to be published.

image image image

Books of fairies tales and legends

Writing for the entertainment of children first appears to have occurred in France, where Charles Perrault wrote 'Mother Goose' for his own children. In it were simple versions of 'Little Red Riding Hood,' 'The Sleeping Beauty' and 'Puss in Boots'.

image

Little Red Riding Hood' 'The Sleeping Beauty' ‘Puss in Boots'

The first English translation of 'Mother Goose' appeared in the early 18th century. Though in the early 18th century 'Robinson Crusoe' (1719) and 'Gulliver's Travels' (1726) were written and published but neither were intended for children, however, when abridged versions appeared they were eagerly devoured by young people, and each provided a stimulus for later writing for children.

image

Entertaining books for children are obviously written in all countries Grimm’s Fairy Tales were written in 1823 -26 and those of Andersen in 1846, 'Alice in Wonderland', published in 1865 - possibly the cornerstone of all our output of personified animals and animated objects. Many more writers devoted mainly to children’s literature during 19th century.

image        image

Grimm’s Fairy Tales                                               Andersen’s Tales

image image

'Alice in Wonderland'

Gradually there was a boom in children’s books and adventure stories set in imaginary and unknown worlds become very popular.

It is not until the 20th century when children’s literature flourishes with the inclusion of happy colourful pictures to illustrate the stories.

image image

Children stories with colourful illustrations

Since early childhood, in their attempt to know everything that surrounds them, children have always been fascinated by the colorful books with many pictures. While growing, they deciphered the first letters of the alphabet and so they started reading the first written words. Then they read tales and later on, entire books containing stories, fairy tales or short stories…

The children books represent a first step into the fantastic world where the tales of Brothers Grimm such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Valiant Little Tailor or Little Red Riding Hood should not miss.

And what child has not entered the world of Hans Christian Andersen´s stories when reading Thumbelina, The Little Mermaid, The Swans, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Snow Queen, The Ugly Duckling? Or what child has not told an innocent lie and his nose has become longer like Pinocchio´s.

Children around the entire world were also enchanted by the fantastic world of Jules Verne and the adventures of Baron Munchhausen together with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Gulliver´s Travels and Robinson Crusoe. They are often translated into several languages; therefore they reach many countries and bring joy to children in the whole world.

The book is a dear friend and invaluable source of knowledge and enrichment of language.

image image

Books are our dear friend and invaluable source of knowledge

Even in this modern world of Computers, Internet and TV, an important step in raising children is teaching to read and acquire the culture of reading because in that way children are learnt to express themselves nicely and they enrich their vocabulary.

New Book on history of Royal Mail

image

On 3rd November, Penguin Books will publish Masters of the Post - the first complete history of the Royal Mail. Based on the Royal Mail's comprehensive archives, Masters of the Post brings to life the great personalities and stories from its history over 500 years - from Rowland Hill, who imposed the penny post and set Victorian expansion on its way, to Tony Benn who championed modernization in the 1960s, from the postal engineers who built the first programmable computer for the wartime code-breakers of Bletchley Park to the security boffs who failed to prevent the Great Train Robbery. It concludes with today's debate over privatization and the future of the Royal Mail, which the book shows to be a long theme in its history.

The Lighter Side

" The world beyond philately..."

A cover was offered for sale in the recent Christoph Gaertner Ltd. Of Germany in their “ASIA 8th March 2011 auction, with a following description:

1943/64, AZAD HIND, set to 12a (9 values) of 1943 stamps printed in Berlin on related, N.S.T.Bose- FDC (23-1-1964) as a souvenir cover with Netaji Bhawan cachet, and 1r stamp in black & orange unmounted mint together with the 1968 20p stamp in similar design. An unusual but related combination as N.S.T. Bose (founder of the Indian National Army) was responsible for the printing of these stamps.(M) estimated at Euro 100.-This piece was sold for Euro 160.- !

image

image

A souvenir cover with Azad Hind Stamps with Netaji Bhawan Cachet

It is a well-known fact that these stamps were printed in Germany during the Second World War and were planned for their used in liberated India by “Azad Hind Fauz” which was initiated by Subhas Chandra Bose. But Germany was defeated by the Allied Forces and the dream of liberation of India of Subhas Chandra Bose could not be realized. These so-called “AZAD HIND” stamps were never used postally any time in India or elsewhere. On the other hand many of these stamps were destroyed and burnt. So the cover bearing Azad Hind stamps obliterated by a nice and clear round cancellation reading “ NETAJI SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE/ NETAJI BHAVAN /CALCUTTA / 23.1.64 “ although may be genuine and the person who purchased this cover may be a devotee to Neataji Subhas Chandra Bose, but the cover has absolutely no philatelic value as such! The devotion to a person reflects even in the price of a fake souvenir!

image

Another cover which was published in “ITS Stamp News” (July-Sept. 2003) is also such dubious creation of an enthusiastic stamp-collector. It also shows the combination of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose stamps issued on 23rd January 1964 along with AZAD HIND stamps! The cancellation in this case is the same as above of Netaji Bhavan dated 23.1.1963. Interesting to see that it was addressed to none less than the stalwart of Indian Philately, Mr. Jal Coper ! - The Philatelic Watchdog

LESS KNOWN FACT FOR JAINISM COLLECTORS:
BOMBAY UNIVERSITY STAMP
- Sudhir Jain

Most of the Jainism theme collectors may not know that stamp issued on 31st Dec.1957 on the occasion of centenary of Bombay University is related to JAINISM theme. Historical and architectural Rajabai Tower is depicted on this stamp.

image image

Rajabai Clock Tower is among one of the most cherished and outstanding landmarks of Mumbai. It is situated near Church gate Railway Station in the campus of Bombay University. It houses the library of the University and has some of the brilliant stained glass windows in Asia. It was named after Rajabai who was a religious Jain lady. She was blind. Her son Premchand Roychand Jain was a cotton broker who founded the Bombay Stock Exchange. Her mother being blind and staunch follower of Jainism, had to eat her dinner before sunset. The bells of Rajabai tower helped her know the time.

Premchand Roychand started construction of this tower in the year 1869.It was designed by an English architect Sir Gilbert Scott on the lines of famous Big Ben clock tower of London.  Presenting a fusion of Venetian and Gothic styles of architecture, Rajabai Tower is constructed out of Kurla stone. The total cost of construction came to Rs. 2 lakhs which was a princely sum in those days. It was completed in the year 1878. This 280 feet high tower was at that time the tallest building in Bombay.

Through the sound of bell of this tower, Rajabai  didn't require anyone's help to know the time and she could herself take her dinner before sunset. . In the earlier times, it played the tunes of 'Rule Britannia', 'God Save the King' and 'A Handel Symphony', amongst the sixteen tunes that changed four times a day. However, currently plays only 'Big Ben’ after every fifteen minutes.
